I went here as they were recommended to me as brilliant with Guinea Pigs I am so glad I came the vet was very helpful and honest with sympathy and I felt safe in my choices He did everything he could do and I knew that euthanasia was the best solution I felt it was best for my very precious piggie I will definitely use them again They did so much on the spur of the moment My usual vets would never have been that keen or bothered and I know that they dragged on with unnecessary procedures that didnt help my poorly pig Thank you all so much
I took my degu here when they first showed signs of dental problems. The senior vet rushed every consultation we had. When my degu underwent dental surgery and subsequently developed an ulcer on the end of his tongue I was told to 'monitor it' but not told what were positive/negative signs were. The vet didn't prescribe any painkillers, and when the ulcer became infected he told me that he couldn't prescribe antibiotics because the original cause of the ulcer was manual movement rather than bacterial - even though subsequently it became infected with bacteria??? I must have had 4 or 5 follow up appointments (at my own request) within 1.5 weeks and each time felt brushed off and condescended to. The consultations consisted almost entirely of him telling me what he would do if my degu were a rabbit or a horse...and telling me how small degus are. I understand that degus are more difficult to work on due to their size but what I didn't want to hear for 15 minutes straight was what work he could do on other animals. I wanted him to tell me what he could do for mine!! He never discussed post-surgery care - i.e. recovery food, painkillers and no xrays were taken, or told what issues occurred during surgery etc. It was in one door and out the next - thanks for the cash, bye. As the ulcer got worse and became infected I was told the best option was euthanasia as it wasn't getting any better and my degu was emaciated (125g!!!) because he couldn't eat. At my wits end I contacted a vet at the other end of the county and within a week or two my degu was recovering following the new veterinary advice. The end of the tongue unfortunately was too far gone and died and fell off, but once that occurred the remainder of the tongue was healthy and my degu was able to eat again. If I had listened to the St Clement vet I would have euthanised him - my degu subsequently lived for another 18 months at a weight of between 200g and 220g and when we had him euthanised we knew it was for the right reason so that he didn't suffer and NOT because the vet couldn't be bothered or didn't have the specialist knowledge to successfully treat a small rodent.
